Andalucia’s first interactive museum, Parque de las Ciencias opened in 1995. It now covers 70,000 square metres. The park is divided into seven permanent exhibition halls and a number of temporary exhibition areas. There are a number of cafes and restaurants.

For children, probably the most fascinating exhibition is the ‘journey into the human body’. An interactive guide takes you on a tour of the body and how various bits of it work. The origins of mankind is well explained. One exhibit still puzzles me. You sit on one side of a metal ‘reader’ with your head resting on the plate. Your adversary sits on the other side. Between the two plates is a case with a metal ball suspended inside. The ball is pushed by the gamma rays produced by the brain. The winner is actually the person who is most at rest and therefore producing more gamma rays. You have to see it.

The planaterium is another popular exhibit. Over 7,000 stars are projected on to the overhead dome. They then rotate as they do in real life. The skyline of Granada, the Alhambra and Albaicin etc. appears as silhouettes against which the stars move as the seasons progress.

Outside there are nearly 30,000 sq metres of parks. They include a butterfly house, an astronomical observatory, an area used for birds of prey demonstrations, a 50m high observation tower with great views over Granada and something called a mental gymnastics tent. Mind bending stuff.
