Twelve White Villages

Andalucia is famous for its white villages. Typically they are of Moorish origin and situated on rocky buttresses to make them easy to defend. Many have a castle that can date back to Roman times. Square houses cluster together, clinging to the rock beneath the castle. A small square with a 16th-century church and perhaps a bar and bodega provides the social centre of the village with narrow twisting streets, some barely wide enough for a donkey leading off. The dwellings are all painted a brilliant white, reflecting the light from a hot sun in a cloudless blue sky. This is everybody's idea of a white village. We have chosen twelve of the best white villages in Andalucia. Some will surprise you.
