Jaén Carnival is a festival that celebrates the history of the city. You can expect costume parades and performances by choirs, comparsas, murgas and chirigotas who present a satirical view of events throughout the year.

The dates for Jaén Carnival 2025 are not yet confirmed. In 2024, the event took place from 2 to 17 February 2024.

Jaen Carnival 2025: What to Expect

The Carnival in Jaén promises an array of vibrant events.

The festivities typically kick off with the Carnival Group Contest semifinals at Teatro Darymelia, featuring performances from various comparsas (carnival troupes) and chirigotas (satirical groups) from Jaén and other cities. Highlights include the Carnival Proclamation by Ajopringue, a school parade, and a grand finale contest.

There's also a costume contest, activities in Parque de la Concordia, including workshops, performances, and a treasure hunt. The celebration concludes with the traditional "Burial of the Sardine" ceremony, marking the end of the carnival. These events offer a rich cultural experience, showcasing local traditions, music, and humour.

These were the key dates and events for Jaen Carnival 2024:

  • 2-4 Feb: Semifinals of Carnival Group Contest at Teatro Darymelia.
  • 8 Feb: Carnival Proclamation by Ajopringue at Teatro Darymelia, with performances and awards. (8.00pm, free entry until capacity is reached)
  • 9 Feb: School Parade through various streets and evening performances in Parque de la Concordia.
  • 10 Feb: Carnival activities in Parque de la Concordia, including workshops, local performances, and a costume contest with awards ceremony.
  • 11 Feb: More activities and performances in Parque de la Concordia, including a treasure hunt.
  • 17 Feb: Carnival in Las Infantas and the traditional "Burial of the Sardine" ceremony (Plaza de la Audiencia, Colón, Álamos, Plaza de San Francisco and Bernabé Soriano.) at 6.00pm.
