The Fuente de Piedra is a Nature Reserve in Malaga Province. The lake, 6.7 km long and 2.5 km wide is the largest endorheic, that is a closed hydrological system, in Andalucia. Water is obtained from rainfall, streams and underground springs but the only outlet for the water is via evaporation. The depth and extent of the lake therefore vary greatly during the year. The water is saline and the salt was exploited from Roman times until the 1950s. The channels and walls constructed over that period are essential for the many species of aquatic birds that either live or migrate there. The lake is justly famous for its resident and migratory flamingos although there are many more species to look out for.
If you visit the reserve then the best place to start is the Visitor’s Centre from which there are paths leading you to and around a number of the smaller lakes that make up the reserve as well as round the main lake.
