Cabo de Gata-Nijar | El Albardinal Botanic Garden at Rodalquilar
in Nijar Municipality in Almería Province, Andalucia, Spain
By Nick Nutter | 25 May 2020
El Albardinal Botanic Garden is one of the ten gardens in the Andalucian Network of Botanic Gardens in Natural Sites. The gardens in the network are centres for the conservation, recovery and reintroduction of wild species. Each centre is in a different ecological zone and concentrates on plants endemic to that zone. Not surprisingly, El Albardinal concentrates on plants from the semi-arid areas of eastern Andalucia.
Specific terrains include the dunes and beaches, salt marshes, gypsum areas, sub deserts of Tabernas and rocky areas found in the Cabo de Gata. A large part of the garden has been left to develop as a completely wild, natural area, with plants establishing themselves and competing with one another.
An area of particular interest grows traditional crops in arid conditions, including esparto grass, dry-farmed grains and a range of vegetables.
Other areas concentrate on the flowering plants and herbs endemic to the arid regions of Almeria including threatened and rare species.
