The natural park of Despeñaperros straddles the only natural break in the 500 kilometre long Sierra Morena. The Despeñaperros Pass connects Andalucia with Castile La Mancha and all points north. Today the pass is used by the high speed railway line and the A4 road. In times past it was used by marauding Muslims and conquering Christians.
