For those that appreciate a week of satirical fun then the Concha Fina Carnival in La Línea de la Concepción is not to be missed.
The Concha Fina Carnival is a competition between the winners of the group contests at the Cádiz Carnival and local chirigotas and comparsas. Chirigotas is a style of folk song that originated in Cádiz province, they are satirical songs, generally aimed at political figures or aspects of local life. The performers wear elaborate costumes. Comparsas are the costumed groups of singers and musicians that take part in carnival processions.
The chirigotas and comparsas take to the streets on the Saturday and many of the spectators participate by wearing fancy dress.
On the Sunday we see a repeat performance except with even more exuberance culminating in the aptly named ‘Parade of Humour’, ‘Cabalgata del Humor’.
The carnival concludes with the curiously named, ‘Entierro de la Concha Fina’, literally, ‘Burial of the Fine Shell’, that is actually a celebration of the local clam.
