The Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas is in the south of Córdoba province. It was approved by UNESCO in 2006 due to the unique nature of the landscape and the 250 million years of geological history in its rock strata, becoming known as the Sierras Subbéticas UNESCO Global Geopark. The Sierras Subbéticas is a limestone massif, 350 square kilometres in area, that was uplifted 50 million years ago during the Alpine folding era, when the African tectonic plate collided with the Iberian plate. Once the seabed emerged into the air, it began to erode, resulting in the fantastic karstic formations you see throughout the Subbéticas.
