El Humarrachos, literally, 'The Smoky' has its roots back in 1596 when the village of Berja was plagued with day and night long mists and a huge parliament of rooks.
The villagers promised to pray and fast throughout the eve of San Tesifón if god would rid them of these problems. Apparently it worked and ever since the town celebrates the event on the night of the 31st March
Bonfires are lit throughout the municipality, hence the name of the festival, and there is a general party with dancing, singing and meeting the neighbours for some of the local bacon and beans stew, plus wine of course. Visitors can try the stew at any of the bars in the village.
