Pendon de Almeria

On the morning of the 26th December, St. Stephen's Day, an unusual ceremony takes place in the city of Almeria to commemorate the capture of the city by the Catholic Monarchs in 1489, Banner Day.

The original Banner that the Catholic Monarchs gave to the city is carried through the centre of the city towards the Cathedral where a mass is celebrated in honour of the event. The person in charge of carrying the banner is the youngest councilor of the town hall. Later the fireworks accompany the placement of the banner on the balcony of the town hall, where it is located until the end of the day.
